Moving from fluid to solid, the flat casts show the process of the concrete as a cast material. Concrete rubble, sand and rainwater collected in tanks around the building were mixed, poured, and solidified. Discarded building material from around the building (bricks, blocks) were used to build up formwork; moving between found objects, void, and solid, their traces become visible once the formwork is removed. What is a discarded piece of concrete? What does it become when you give it some attention, much like a found fossil or geological formation? And how could instability and natural forces be seen as co-authors of architecture, rather than risks to diminish? The project speculates on the uncertain future of Knolden – a small, seemingly unremarkable peninsula along the Danish coast. As sea-levels rise, Knolden will lose its connection to the mainland. A gradual islandification that questions the relationship between inhabitants and their environment. Distancing itself from the conventional strive for stability (in coastlines, as well as in architecture), the project takes instability as a premise – even a desire. It speculates on a future where man-made and natural actors actively engage with each other; a hybrid formed over time, where their boundaries blur. Inhabitation becomes synanymous with mapping: through recording and probing of the ground, the ephemeral is recorded and manipulated. As Knolden gradually escapes the mainland, the landscape begins to change by man-made and natural forces. Architecture, and especially its archetype – the house – is generally expected to keep its inhabitants safe and removed from any outside threat. Keeping the inside in and the outside out, the house comes with a promise of stability and safety. But what would it mean to diminish this expectation? Emerging from the most unstable houses of Knolden, the Unstable Houses are not reminicent of anything you would expect from a house. Instead, they challenge our strive for stability, seeking new relationships between architecture, inhabitant and its environment.&nbsp; CLIFF HOUSE A shed on the highest, most exposed point of Knolden;
